Question
What is the evidence that proves that the Tawraah and Injeel are distorted? What is the interpretation of the verse (what means): {But how is it that they come to you for judgment while they have the Torah, in which is the judgment of Allaah?}[Quran 4:43]
Answer
All perfect praise be to Allaah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah, and that Muhammad, sallallaahu 'alyhi wa sallam, is His slave and Messenger. There are a number of verses in the Quran as well as explicit Hadeeths that prove the Tawraah and the Injeel have been distorted. The following is evidence from the Quran: • {Among the Jews are those who distort words from their [proper] usages.}[Quran 4:46] • {And from among the Jews. [They are] avid listeners to falsehood, listening to another people who have not come to you. They distort words beyond their [proper] usages.}[Quran 5:41] The Prophet, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam forbade the Muslims from asking the Jews and Christians about anything, because we cannot distinguish whether they are telling the truth or lies. Hence, if Muslims accept their answer and they are lying, the Muslims would be accepting falsehood and if Muslims reject their answer and they are saying the truth, the Muslims would be denying the truth. This Hadeeth was narrated by Ahmad and Al-Bazzaar Despite the fact that this Hadeeth may be considered Dha‘eef (weak) to some extent, there are still other narrations supporting it. The Prophet, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, warned against their ’falsehood’ and this proves that the Tawraah in its current form is distorted and altered whereas its original form was definitely free from any trace of falsehood since it had been revealed to Moosaa The most evident proof that the Tawraah is distorted is the awful acts ascribed to the prophets of Allaah The Almighty. The least religious person would not stoop to ascribe such horrid acts to the prophets. For example, the Jews say that Nooh (Noah), Luut (Lot) and Daawood (David), may Allaah exalt their mention, drank wine, committed incest and breached their covenants. The most evident proof that the current Injeel is distorted is how it mentions that ‘Eesaa (Jesus) As for the verse (what means): {But how is it that they come to you for judgment while they have the Torah, in which is the judgment of Allaah?}[Quran 4:43], it is intended to reflect wonder about the Jews who asked the Prophet, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, to judge a case of stoning an adulterer, even though they did not believe in the Prophet, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, nor in Islam, while the ruling they were asking about was already mentioned in the Tawraah. They referred to the Prophet, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, in the hope that he would pass a ruling which would be in accordance with the Tawraah that they had distorted. This verse rebukes the Jews who were involved in the incident, because they sought the ruling of the Prophet, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, even though they denied his prophethood. In addition, they did not implement the rulings of the Tawraah even though they believed in it as the truth revealed by Allaah The Almighty to Moosaa Hence, it was even more likely that the Jews would not implement the ruling passed by the Prophet, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam.
