Question
Was there a Prophet by the name of Daniel? Muslims are keeping this name for their sons. Is it a permissible Muslim name?
Answer
All perfect praise be to Allaah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah, and that Muhammad is His slave and Messenger. We ask Allaah to exalt his mention as well as that of his family and all his companions.
Daniel 
was a Prophet who was sent to the Israelites. We are not aware as to exactly when he lived but it was after the era of Prophet David (Daawood) and before Prophets, Zakariaa and Yahyaa, may Allaah exalt their mention. Since it is confirmed that he was a Prophet, then there is no harm to name a new-born child after him. The Prophet 
said: "Name after the names of the Prophets." [Abu Daawood]
