All perfect praise be to Allah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allah, and that Muhammad is His slave and Messenger.
According to the most preponderant opinion of the statements of the jurists, the postpartum period is forty days. If a woman becomes pure from bleeding before the completion of forty days, even on her first day, then she is like other pure women; she must perform Ghusl and pray. It is forbidden for her to pray before the bleeding stops and before performing Ghusl. After her bleeding stops and after she performs Ghusl, her husband is permitted to have sexual intercourse with her if he does not fear any harm on her by doing so.
Being in postpartum period is not an Islamic impediment for the husband to share the same bed with his wife, or for her to go out or to travel for her need. There is no specific period that prevents the postpartum woman from going out before the end of the postpartum period. However, she must abide by the Islamic conditions when she goes out and when she travels, such as wearing her Hijaab, being accompanied by a Mahram and other rulings.
It is permissible for her to attend the funeral, and to pray the funeral prayer if she has become pure; however, she should not follow the funeral procession because there are Islamic texts that prohibit [strongly discourage] doing so [for a woman], as in the Hadeeth narrated by Umm ‘Attiyah Al-Ansaariyyah who said: “We were forbidden from following funeral processions, but that was not made mandatory upon us.”
For more benefit on women following the funeral procession, please refer to Fataawa 85290 and 11098.
