Ruling on Yellow and Brown Discharge Before and After Menstruation

Question

Assalamu alaikum,I know that yellow discharge followed up by menses is considered menses, however Im irregular and my discharge is yellow a lot of the time. If I were to count such discharge (followed by menses) menses, Id be pure for a week or even have crossed 15 days when Im bleeding. Can I just count menses from the point I have brown discharge or blood and then until I have the sign of purity (I usually dont get the sign until the 15th day or even after, so I make ghusl after 15)

Answer

All perfect praise be to Allah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allah, and that Muhammad ( sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention )) is His Slave and Messenger.

The ruling we give is that yellowish and brownish discharge is not considered menstruation unless it is connected to the blood at the end of one's menstruation. As for what a woman sees before the appearance of menstrual blood, such as yellow or brown discharge, it is not regarded as menstruation according to the view we adopt.

Accordingly, you are to consider the beginning of your menstruation from the moment you first see actual blood. You should perform ghusl after the bleeding stops and you observe the sign of purity. Lastly, you should not pay attention to any yellow or brown discharge seen before the blood, nor to what is seen after the sign of purity.
