Question
What is the religious ruling on selling during the time of prayer? Is there a difference between selling during the Friday prayer and during other prayers? May Allaah The Almighty Reward you.
Answer
All perfect praise be to Allaah, The Lord of the worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah, and that Muhammad, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, is His slave and messenger.
Performing the five obligatory prayers in congregation is an obligation on all free Muslim men according to the preponderant opinion of scholars as long as there is no valid excuse or impediment such as fear, rain or the like. Hence, it is impermissible for Muslim men to preoccupy themselves with buying and selling or anything else during prayer time unless there is a necessity for it. Indeed, a necessity must only be answered proportionately.
If these transactions took place during the congregational prayer and the buyer and seller are not among those who are exempted from attending the congregational prayer or it was unnecessary to conduct such transactions during the prayer, then these transactions are valid but both the buyer and seller are considered sinners due to their negligence in performing a religious obligation.
As for engaging in trade after the Athaan (i.e. call for prayer) has been called for the Friday prayer, such transactions are forbidden and invalid.
Hence, it is clear that buying and selling during the time of the Friday prayer is not like engaging in it during the other prayers with regards to the invalidity of the transactions.
