Question

Was Bibi Amina ,the mother of Prophet sallallahu alaihi wasalam, from tribe Bunu Najar of Medina?

Answer

All perfect praise be to Allaah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah, and that Muhammad sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) is His slave and Messenger.

The mother of the Prophet sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) was from Quraysh, from the tribe of Bani Zuhrah. Her name was Aaminah bint (daughter of) Wahb ibn (son of) 'Abd Manaaf ibn Zuhrah ibn Kilaab ibn Murrah ibn Ka’b ibn Lu'ayy ibn Ghaalib ibn Fihr ibn Maalik ibn An-Nadhr. Ibn Hajar may Allaah have mercy upon him said in Fat-h Al-Baari when commenting on the statement of Al-Bukhari: “Banu Zuhrah were the maternal uncles of the Prophet sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention )”, meaning because his mother Aaminah was from them, and the relatives of the mother are maternal uncles.” [End of quote]

It could be that you are confused about what the authors of biography of Prophet sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) mentioned concerning the fact that Banu An-Najjaar – who were inhabitants of Al-Madeenah – were the maternal uncles of the Prophet sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ). What is meant by this is that they were his maternal uncles from the side of his grandfather ‘Abdul-Muttalib. Burhaan Ad-Deen Al-Halabi stated in As-Seerah Al-Halabiyyah and other books that Bani An-Najjaar were the maternal uncles of the Prophet sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) and then he said: “meaning, the maternal uncles of his grandfather ‘Abdul-Muttalib.” [End of quote]

Allaah Knows best.
