Question
As-Salamu Alaykum, I have recently come across sadaqah jayriyah ( excuse the spelling ) and would like more infomation. 1. I have been informed that it is known that sadaqah can be done for the deceased parents, but it was unclear whether this could be done for anyone else for example; other relatives, a friend or anyone. 2.What kinds of sadaqah are permissible for a deceased, I have come across water pots outside houses, putting cups inside the masjid and was told in both these cases that when someone drinks from them the reward goes to the deceased. 3.Please can you give me as much knowledge as you can on this topic including references to refer to. Answer
All perfect praise be to Allaah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah, and that Muhammad is His slave and Messenger. We ask Allaah to exalt his mention as well as that of his family and all his companions.
It is permissible to give charity (with a continuing reward) on behalf of relatives or any other Muslim, exactly as it is permissible to do so on behalf of one’s parents. Al-Hajjaawi 
from the said: 'The reward of any good act that one performs on behalf of a dead person will reach him.'
