Question
I'm not a Muslim now. I might want to become a Muslim. However, I have already broken most of the Islamic rules, because at that time I did not think about becoming a Muslim. Can I still be a Muslim? How can I become a Muslim?
Answer
Praise be to Allah, the Lord of the Worlds; and may His blessings and peace be upon our Prophet Muhammad and upon all his Family and Companions.
We ask Allah The Almighty to bestow on you right guidance to the truth and to purify your heart from disbelief.
Know that Allah does not accept any religion from the time Islam was revealed except Islam. Allah Says (interpretation of meaning): {And whoever seeks a religion other than Islam, it will never be accepted of him, and in the Hereafter he will be one of the losers.}[3:85].
So, hasten to become a Muslim.
In addition, it is from the Blessings of Allah upon His slaves that He forgives all their past sins as soon as they become Muslims. Hence they become pure and clean as if they were just born.
Allah Says (interpretation of meaning): {Say to those who have disbelieved, if they cease (from disbelief) their past will be forgiven…..}[8:38]. Allah also Says (interpretation of meaning): {Say: "O 'Ibâdî (My slaves) who have transgressed against themselves (by committing evil deeds and sins)! Despair not of the Mercy of Allâh, verily Allâh forgives all sins. Truly, He is Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful.}[39:53].
As for how to become Muslim, it is easy. First you take a bath. Then you say “Ashhadu Alla Ilaha Illa Allah Wa Ashhadu Anna Muhammadan Rasulu Allah”. This means: “I bear witness that there is no deity worthy of worship except Allah and that Muhammad is His Messenger”. After pronouncing Shahada (the above testimony) you will have to learn how to purify yourself for prayer as well as all other individual obligatory acts such as praying, fasting, …etc.
This could be achieved by asking knowledgeable people, reading, listening to appropriate cassettes and visiting Islamic centers that could be of great help. We ask Allah to guide you to the right path.
