Praying Alone During Travel

Question

Salam alaikum, I have a question regarding congregational prayer: If a person has to travel alone and finds themselves in a place where there is no one with whom they can perform the congregational prayer, does the obligation of congregational prayer still apply to them? Or are they excused in this case and permitted to perform the prayers alone? May Allah reward you with good.

Answer

All perfect praise be to Allah, the Lord of the worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allah and that Muhammad sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) is His slave and Messenger.

If a person has no one with whom to pray in congregation, then congregational prayer is not obligatory upon him, and he should pray alone, as this is what he is able to do — for Allah, the Exalted, does not burden any soul beyond its capacity.

This is corroborated by the authentic hadith in which the Messenger of Allah sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) said:

"If I command you to do something, then do of it what you are able to do." (Bukhari)

Allah Knows best.
