All perfect praise be to Allah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allah, and that Muhammad (ﷺ) is His Slave and Messenger.
It is disliked, according to the majority of scholars, to wear clothing that contains a cross. The Hanbali school has a view that it is prohibited. This is based on what is reported in the authentic collection of Al-Bukhari from ‘Aa’isha
: “That the Prophet (ﷺ) would not leave anything in his house that contained crosses except that he would destroy it.”
An-Nawawi
said in al-Majmu’: “As for clothing that contains images, a cross, or anything distracting, it is disliked to pray in it, towards it, or on it, due to the hadith.” [End quote].
Al-Mardawi
said in al-Insaf: “It is disliked to have a cross on clothing and the like, according to the correct view of the school, and this is the position adopted by the scholars (of the madhhab). There is also the possibility that it is prohibited, and this is the established opinion of Salih. I say: and this is the correct view.” [End quote].
Al-Buhuti
said in Kashshaf al-Qina’: “It is disliked to place the image of a cross on clothing and the like… due to the statement of ‘Aa’isha
: “The Messenger (ﷺ) would not leave anything in his house containing crosses except that he would cut it.” [Abu Dawood]
It is stated in al-Insaf: There is also the possibility that it is prohibited, and this seems to be the established opinion within the madhhab.” [End quote].
Based on this, your situation should be examined. If there is a benefit in working with these people in serving the Muslims, then you may work with them and strive to address the matter by removing or erasing the cross, acting upon what is mentioned in the hadith in Al-Bukhari from 'Aa'isha
: “The Prophet (ﷺ) would not leave anything in his house that contained crosses except that he would destroy it.”
However, if removing it is not possible, then consider the level of need. If it is possible to do without them by training with other parties, then leave working with them. If that is not possible, then you may follow the opinion of those who consider it disliked and continue working with them due to necessity.
In all cases, you must adhere to the Islamic guidelines, such as observing proper hijab, avoiding softening one’s speech (when speaking to non-mahram men), and similar matters.
Allah Knows best.
