The Story of the Conversion of ʿUmar ibn al-Khattab (may Allaah be pleased with him)

Question

Assalamualaikum, my question is, how did umar radiallahu anhu embrace islam?

Answer

All perfect praise be to Allah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allah, and that Muhammad, ﷺ, is His Slave and Messenger.

Several narrations have been reported regarding the story of his acceptance of Islam. Among them is that before embracing Islam, he was intensely hostile toward it. One day, he set out in anger intending to kill the Prophet ﷺ. On his way, he was informed that his sister, Fatimah bint al-Khattab may Allaah be pleased with her and her husband, Saʿid ibn Zayd may Allaah be pleased with him had accepted Islam. He went to them and heard the recitation of Surah Taha. Its verses deeply affected his heart, and his eyes filled with tears. He then proceeded to the house of al-Arqam ibn Abi al-Arqam, where the Prophet ﷺ was, and there he publicly declared his acceptance of Islam.

Another narration states that the Prophet ﷺ was reciting the Qur’an near the Kaʿbah, specifically Surah al-Haqqah, while ʿUmar may Allaah be pleased with him was concealed behind the coverings of the Kaʿbah. When he heard the Qur’an, faith settled in his heart, and he embraced Islam.

His acceptance of Islam was also the result of the supplication of the Prophet ﷺ, who said: “O Allah, strengthen Islam with the more beloved of these two men to You: ʿUmar ibn al-Khattab or Abu Jahl ibn Hisham.” [Al-Tabarani].

ʿUmar may Allaah be pleased with him accepted Islam approximately in the sixth year of the Prophethood, and his conversion was a momentous event by which Allah strengthened the Muslims.

Allah Knows best.
