Question
Aslamualikum, I like a girl in my university, I just want to propose her for marriage, I don't know her adress, can i follow her secretly where she is living or can i propose her in a decent way for marriage, just in order to inform her? Or can i say to her can i visit your home because I want to marry her? Tell me exact answer
Answer
All perfect praise be to Allah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allah, and that Muhammad (sallallaahu 'alayhi wa sallam) is His slave and Messenger.
It is preferable that a virgin woman be approached for marriage through her guardians; however, it is permissible to propose directly to her if the proper Islamic guidelines are observed and there is no fear of the presence of temptation. Al-‘Umrānī (may Allaah have mercy on him) said in al-Bayān fī Madhhab al-Imām al-Shāfi‘ī: “It is permissible for a woman to be proposed to directly, even if she has guardians.” [End quote].
Accordingly, it is permissible for you to ask the woman about the possibility of visiting her home due to your desire to marry her, while observing proper etiquette and Islamic guidelines.
It is also permissible to discreetly follow the woman in order to find out where her house is, so that you may go to propose to her.
Lastly, our advice to you is to observe the customs and norms followed in your country, so long as they do not contradict Islamic law.
