Assalamu 'alaykum deas Shaykh. What is the ruling on visiting tanning salons while fasting?
All perfect praise be to Allaah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah, and that Muhammad, sallallaahu ʻalayhi wa sallam, is His slave and Messenger.
Visiting tanning salons does not affect the validity of fasting. However, you should know that it is impermissible for a Muslim, whether fasting or not, to visit such salons if it involves any violation of the Shareeʻah such as the exposure of ʻAwrah (body parts that must be covered as per the Shareeʻah) or looking at people’s ʻAwrah and the like. When the person commits prohibited acts while fasting, he is jeopardizing the acceptance of his fasting and losing his reward. The Prophet, sallallaahu ʻalayhi wa sallam, said: “Whoever does not give up false speech and evil actions, Allaah is not in need of his leaving food and drink.” [Al-Bukhari and Muslim]
Allaah Knows best.
