Studying in the universities of non-Muslim countries

Question

Is studying in the universities of non-Muslim countries prohibited?

Answer

All perfect praise be to Allaah, the Lord of the worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah, and that Muhammad, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, is His Slave and Messenger.

Enrolling at the universities of non-Muslim countries for the sake of study takes a ruling according to need. If there is a dire need for this, for example the universities have knowledge that is not available elsewhere, it would be permitted to study there. However, the person who enrolls at such universities should be one who is firm and steadfast in his creed so that he is not affected by malicious allegations or prohibited desires.

However, if there is no serious need a Muslim should not join such universities so as to avoid the corrupt environment that can harm a Muslims’ religion and conduct.

Allaah Knows best.
