Hi Brother, I currently live in Canada and in a moral dillema. I graduated from Finance and was in alot of debt. I came across a job with the bank as a Stock Broker and promised myself as soon as I pay of my student loans , I will leave. I currently got offered a student job with the government of Canada. It pay 6 dollars less than what I am currently making now. I prayed salat istakarah and asked ALLAH please make it khair for me to get the job and if its not please protect me. The manager called me within 24 hours and told me I was a perfect candidate for the job. I am worried that I may not be hired back as a full time employee. What should I do? Quit a full time job with the bank or go to the government and hopefully get bridged in after my masters program? May ALLAH reward you
All perfect praise be to Allaah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah, and that Muhammad is His slave and Messenger.
Working in banks that deal with Riba (interest and/or usury) is forbidden and you must immediately leave it unless there is a necessity and there is no necessity for you to work there since you have found a new lawful job – as it appears – that fulfills your needs even though its salary is a little bit less than your salary in the bank, so you have no excuse to stay in your job in the bank that deals with Riba.
For more benefit about dealing with shares that do not abide by the religious conditions in its transactions, please refer to Fataawa 90770 and 81504.
Allaah Knows best.
