Allaah helps His slave as long as His slave helps his Muslim brother

Question

Assalamualaikum Warahmatulla.
I belong to a place in india, which was affected by floods and is still reeling under miseries of the aftermath. Relief to the flood victims is pouring in from many generous individuals and groups. During one such incident, packets of milk was being distributed and people had gone crazy and snatching away the packets, filling their bags, baskets. While some people mostly women were helplessly watching the scene as they could not venture into the crowd and get their share. I was with my friend in his locality watching the incident, while my friend managed to get his share, I told him that I will try to get a few packets and managed to get 3 packets and told my friend to give them to those who are watching helplessly or who are unable to get into the crowd and get the milk packet. With a few minutes the truck with the milk moved to another locality, depriving so many people of their share due to the senseless and selfish behavior of the crowd and those who were distributing the milk.
Later after some time I realized that what I have done is wrong and really feeling very guilty. Please let me know, if I have done a mistake on my part by trying to get those 3 packets which my friend gave to the needy.
Jazakallahu Khaira.

Answer

All perfect praise be to Allaah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah, and that Muhammad sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) is His slave and Messenger.

First of all, may Allaah reward you for fearing Him and feeling afraid to disobey Him, and for being keen on helping the poor and the needy.

We do not see any thing wrong in what you did, but it might be so if such items (milk packets) are for the people of that area and you approached and took them for yourself, in which case you are sinful because of taking what you did not deserve. However, if you had given it to the needy of the area in order to acquit yourself from sin, then you are not sinful.

Also, if you had taken it in order to give it to the weak people who could not take their share, like women, then you will be rewarded for doing so.

Abu Hurayrah may Allaah be pleased with him narrated that the Prophet sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) said: “Allaah helps His Slave as long as His Slave helps his Muslim brother.” [Muslim]

What you did is similar to what Moosa (Moses) may Allaah exalt his mention did when he gave water to the daughters of Shu’ayb; Allaah Says (what means): {He said, “What is your circumstance?” They said, “We do not water until the shepherds dispatch [their flocks]; and our father is an old man.” So he watered [their flocks] for them}[Quran 28:23-24]

Allaah Knows best.
