Fatwa CenterMarrying a second wife without informing parents and relatives
Question
Can a person take second wife if his first wife agrees to it without informing parents & families of either of the two (husband & wife). The second marriage is for the sake of Allah (swt) and not out of lust. The intention is to marry a divorcee.
Answer
All perfect praise be to Allaah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah, and that Muhammad, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, is His Slave and Messenger.
Allaah The Almighty allowed men to marry more than one woman and the only condition He stipulated is that they deal justly with all of their wives. As such, a husband is not required to inform his first wife that he will marry another woman, let alone seek her approval to do so. Also, he is not required to inform his parents or the family of his first wife about that. With regard to the second wife, he is not permitted to marry a woman unless he seeks the permission of her guardian.
Since marriage may be intended for many sound objectives, then sexual desire is not necessarily the only reason behind it, so that a man marries more than one woman.
