Question:

Is bussiness of beauty /cosmetic products permissable in islam ?

Answer:

All perfect praise be to Allaah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah, and that Muhammad sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) is His slave and Messenger.

In principle, selling cosmetics is permissible unless the seller knows that the women who buy them use them for unlawful purposes, such as beautification in front of non-Mahram (a person to whom one can get married), etc. in this case, it is prohibited, according to the saying of Allaah (which means): {And cooperate in righteousness and piety, but do not cooperate in sin and aggression.} [Quran 5:2]

It is worth mentioning that there are two kinds of cosmetics which are prohibited by themselves and thus must be avoided regardless of the purpose of their use:

First: completely or partially impure such as cosmetics that include prohibited ingredients such as lard (swine fat), parts of a dead animal or alcohol.

Second: cosmetics which contain Islamically immoral and indecent women's pictures on the box cover.

Allaah Knows best.
