Question:

I am a married woman, and I am working in a company as Computer Engineer. For the coming 3 months I should travel to Qatar to finish some work there. Is it Halaal for me to travel? Keeping in mind that I will be traveling with a group of woman.

Answer:

All perfect praise be to Allaah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah, and that Muhammad is His slave and Messenger. We ask Allaah to exalt his mention as well as that of his family and all his companions.

It is not permissible for a woman to travel without a husband or a Mahram (a non-marriageable relative) as the Prophet sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) said: "A woman should not travel except with her Mahram." [Al-Bukhari and Muslim] Since the scholars may Allaah have mercy upon them differed regarding the travel of a woman with a safe company to perform the obligation of Hajj (pilgrimage), then it is more appropriate that her travelling without a Mahram for other than Hajj is forbidden especially at this present time whereby temptations and afflictions are so many. So we advise you to endeavour to take your husband or a Mahram with you, otherwise it is not permissible for you travel as this is safer for your religion, dignity and honour.

Allaah knows best.
