Question:
Isha Allah within these days I will receive a new baby girl, and we choose for her the name "Abrar" but some people informed me that this name may be not good because it may enter in the verse [53: 32]? Is the name "Abrar" is good or not?
Answer:
Praise be to Allah, the Lord of the World; and may His blessings and peace be upon our Prophet Muhammad and upon all his Family and Companions.
Every name that indicates glorification or veneration should not be named for this Ayah: {… So ascribe not purity to yourselves. He knows best him who fears Allâh and keep his duty to Him [i.e. those who are Al-Muttaqûn.} [53: 32].
The Prophet (Sallallahu Alaihi wa Sallam) forbade naming a male child with "Rabah" (benefit) "Najeeh" (success) and "Aflah" (prosperity). He said: "Sometimes you will call him is he there? (Taking one of the mentioned names). If he is not there the respond would be, no" . [The Hadith means that one will call for his child whose name is "success", etc. and the respond is that there is no success; no doubt, this is not a good answer considering the meaning of the name, for this reason the Prophet (Sallallahu Alaihi wa Sallam) prohibited such names].
The Prophet (Sallallahu Alaihi wa Sallam) also prevented using the name "Barrah" (pious). Zainab, the daughter of Abu Salamah said that her name was Barrah, the Prophet (Sallallahu Alaihi wa Sallam) said: "Do not ascribe purity to yourself. Allah knows best him who is good: They ask what should we name her? He said: 'Give her the name of Zainab'" . [Reported by Imam Muslim ].
However, we do not see any prohibition in the name of Abrar yet; due to the above verse we feel hesitant to use that name.
Allah knows best.
