Question:

What is the fatwa about gathering and having sermon inside a mosque immediately after Jumu’ah prayers?

Answer:

All perfect praise be to Allah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allah, and that Muhammad sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) is His slave and Messenger.

If the purpose of gathering after the Jumu’ah prayer or any other prayer is a religious one, such as to gain Islamic knowledge, or to teach Islam to others, etc., then it is permitted, since the mosques are built for this purpose.

Leaving the mosque immediately after completing the Friday prayer is not mandatory. Imam Ibn Atiyyah said when interpreting the verse in which Allah Says (what means): {And when the prayer has been concluded, disperse within the land and seek from the bounty of Allah, and remember Allah often that you may succeed.} [Quran 62:10]; all the entire Muslim Ummah is in agreement that this ruling is not mandatory; rather, it is only for permissibility. Imam At-Tabari narrated from Imam Adh-Dhahhaak that he said: 'the ruling of dispersal in the above verse is only a permission from Allah. Therefore, one may sit there or may leave the mosque after the Jumu’ah prayer.'

However, if the gathering is not for a religious purpose, then it is better to protect the mosques from such matters.

Allah knows best.
