Ruling on Working in Health Insurance Data Entry and Subscribing to Commercial Health Insurance

Question:

Please don’t link another fatwa. There’s a job and I want to know if it’s halal. The job requires us to do tasks around a pharmacy and one of those tasks are helping customers.A lot of customers in America have health insurance that I would have to put into the computer. Health insurance isn’t mandatory here but the prices for medication and care is very very high so people get insurance for it to be easier. Would this job be halal even if I have to input customers insurance in the computers?

Answer:

All perfect praise be to Allah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allah, and that Muhammad is His Slave and Messenger.

There is no harm in working in a position that involves entering health insurance data for clients, as this does not constitute direct or intentional assistance in concluding a commercial health insurance contract.

It should also be noted that in non-Muslim countries where cooperative (takaful) insurance is not available, it is permitted to subscribe to commercial health insurance — even if it is not mandatory — due to the general need for medical treatment and the high cost of healthcare. This is the ruling issued by the European Council for Fatwa and Research.
