All perfect praise be to Allaah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah, and that Muhammad, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, is His slave and messenger.
Perhaps the questioner is referring to the Hadeeth related by Abu Hurayrah in which the Prophet, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, said: “You are in a time when whoever abandons a tenth of what he is ordered to do, then he is ruined. Then, there will come a time in which whoever does a tenth of what he is ordered to do, he will be saved.” [At-Tirmithi]
The Isnaad of this Hadeeth was declared weak by a group of scholars, such as Al-Albaani and Ibn Al-Jawzi . Ibn Al-Jawzi wrote, “Abu ‘Abd Ar-Rahmaan An-Nasaa’i deemed this Hadeeth to be Munkar (objectionable). Nu‘aym ibn Hammaad reported it, and he is not a trustworthy reporter.” [Al-‘Ilal Al-Mutanaahiyah]
The Hadeeth was reported with a different wording which was classified as authentic by Al-Albaani in his book As-Silsilah As-Saheehah, number 2501. It reads, “You are living in a time when there are many men of knowledge and few orators. In it, whoever fails to apply one tenth of what he knows, he will be doomed. After this, there will come a time when there will be few men of knowledge and many orators. Whoever, adheres to one tenth of what he knows, he will be saved.”
Allaah Knows best.
