Question:

Is there an authentic tradition that Hell will slip from the hands of the angels on the Day of Resurrection; then, the Prophet, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam (may Allaah exalt his mention), will hold it and Allaah The Almighty will order it to listen to the Prophet, sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam, and obey him?

Answer:

All perfect praise be to Allaah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah, and that Muhammad sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) is His slave and Messenger.

On the authority of ‘Abdullaah ibn Mas‘ood may Allaah be pleased with him the Messenger of Allaah, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, stated that Hell will be brought on that Day (the Day of Resurrection) with seventy bridles; and for every bridle there will be seventy thousand angels pulling it . [Muslim]

We did not find a Hadeeth denoting that Hell will slip from the hands of the angels as you mentioned. However, Al-Qurtubi may Allaah have mercy upon him stated on the authority of Zayd Ibn Aslam may Allaah have mercy upon him that Hell will slip from the hands of the angels and they will catch it  again. The chain of narration of this Hadeeth is not authentic. Abu Haamid may Allaah have mercy upon him mentioned a tradition close to the meaning mentioned by the questioner but without a chain of narrators.

Therefore, all this is of no significance.

Allaah Knows best.
