Question:
Do Decree and Fate determine one’s wife or is it his choice?
Answer:
All perfect praise be to Allaah, The Lord of the worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah, and that Muhammad, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, is His slave and messenger.
Everything in this universe happens according to the Fate of Allaah The Almighty. On the authority of Ibn ‘Umar the Messenger of Allaah, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, said that everything happens according to the Predestination and Decree of Allaah. [Muslim]
However, this does not mean that a person is compelled to do his actions. Allaah The Almighty recorded the Decree of everything 50,000 years before the creation of the heavens and the earth. He recorded them because He Knows everything; what happened, what is happening and what will happen. Allaah The Almighty Knew that people would do certain things and abandon certain things. Consequently, He recorded all these things and gave man the will to choose and the ability to do what he wills. Therefore, every person has a will and the ability to do what he wills freely without any compulsion. Every person perceives that he has these faculties. Only an obstinate person argues against these facts that are indicated in the texts of the Quran and the Sunnah. Allaah Knows best.
