All perfect praise be to Allaah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah, and that Muhammad is His slave and Messenger.
We are ordered by the Sharee’ah to move in the land in order to earn our living; Allaah Says (what means): {It is He who made the earth tame for you, so walk among its slopes and eat of His provision and to Him is the resurrection.}[Quran 67:15]
Therefore, it is permissible for a person to travel outside his country in order to earn his living, and if he seeks a lawful job, and has good intentions, then he will be rewarded by Allaah. Indeed, what is permissible to do becomes an act of obedience due to good intentions. The evidence for this is the saying of the Prophet : “…and in a man's sexual intercourse (with his wife) there is a charity. They (the Companions) said: “O, Prophet of Allaah, is there a reward for him who satisfies his sexual desire amongst us?” He () said: “Tell me, if he were to do it in a forbidden way, would it not be a sin on his part? Similarly, if he were to do it in a lawful way [i.e. with his wife], he should get a reward.” [Muslim]
As regards saying that migration for earning one’s living is desirable, then we are not aware of any evidence for it. It might be that this is less appropriate because if a Muslim finds a way to earn his living in a lawful manner and avoid ill-gotten money, and he stays amongst his wife and children to nurture them, and stays among his relatives keeping ties with them, then it is better for him to reside in his country.
