Working as an air crew member who sometimes serves wine

Question:

Al Salam Allaikom, My name is HADWA and i am married to a cabin crew on an international arab airline based in dubai. My question here is that sometimes he is obliged to serve wine during his flights, he is trying as much as possible to avoid serving it by asking other colleagues to do it but sometimes there is no other way except doing it. This unfortunatly happens in rare cases. Is his income halal or not because it worries us a lot. Thanks a lot. TAREK

Answer:

All perfect praise be to Allaah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah, and that Muhammad, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, is His slave and Messenger.

Any job which involves helping in consuming intoxicants is a forbidden job, therefore, it is not permissible for your husband to continue in this job if he cannot avoid  serving intoxicants.  Rather, he is obliged to leave this job and look for another job which does not involve sinning. Whoever leaves something for the sake of Allaah, Allaah will compensate him with something better.  Allaah Says (what means): {And whoever fears Allaah and keeps his duty to Him, He will make a way for him to get out from every difficulty.  And He will provide him from sources he never could imagine.}[Quran 65: 2-3]  The permissibility of the money he earns from his job depends on the extent to which he helped in what is forbidden, therefore, he should try his best to evaluate it and then spend it in charitable purposes with the intention of getting rid of forbidden money, and not with the intention of giving charity.
