Assad in London for Talks on Territories & Iraq

Tony Blair will be meeting President Bashar al-Assad of Syria in Downing Street on Monday. It is the first time a Syrian leader has paid an official visit to Britain, and the crisis in Iraq is almost certain to be the main topic of conversation. Syria has supported the UN on weapons inspections but President Assad has warned of the dangers of a US-led war against Iraq.

The last meeting between the British prime minister and Syria's new young president, in Damascus last year, will be remembered for the frosty atmosphere at their joint news conference.

In spite of continuing differences of opinion on some issues, Britain regards the relationship with Syria as important, particularly now as international pressure on Syria's neighbour, Iraq, is maintained.

Last month, much to everyone's surprise, Syria voted in favour of the tough new UN resolution calling on Iraq to disarm.

Syria's unexpected support for the resolution is seen as something of a turning point

However, President Assad is strongly opposed to the idea of a war with Baghdad.

He says this would merely create fertile soil for terrorism.

Syria is still on America's list of state sponsors of terrorism, and Britain remains concerned about the continuing presence in Damascus of extremist Palestinian groups.

As Britain tries to foster better relations with Syria, Syrian newspapers have said that President Assad will use this visit to encourage a greater European role in the Middle East peace process.
