Question:

I suffer from fear and whispers whenever I perform Wudhoo’ (ablution) during the daytime in Ramadan, to the extent that I cannot perform Wudhoo’ when I am fasting. I fear that this renders my fasting invalid. What should I do? Is this a disease?

Answer:

In the Name of Allah, The Most Merciful, The Ever-Merciful
Dear brother, Assalaamu ‘Alaykum.
Your fear and whispers whenever you perform Wudhoo’ during the daytime of Ramadan are because you fear spoiling your fast by swallowing water while rinsing the mouth.
This can be treated in two ways:
First: supplicating Allah, relying on Him and seeking refuge in Allah from the whispers of the accursed devil. Allah The Almighty Says (what means): {Say, "I seek refuge in the Lord of mankind, The Sovereign of mankind. The God of mankind, from the evil of the retreating whisperer - who whispers [evil] into the breasts of mankind - From among the jinn and mankind."} [Quran 114: 1-6]
Second: knowledge and insight: You should know that The One Who has commanded you to perform Wudhoo’ while you are fasting is Allah, Who has also commanded you to observe fasting. When you perform Wudhoo’ and rinse your mouth with water while you are fasting, you are actually obeying your Lord. Accordingly, your fasting is valid and the wetness you find in your mouth after rinsing it with water is forgivable. What you have to do is get the water out of your mouth and avoid swallowing it. In this manner, your doubts are cast away through knowledge.
"Insight" means that you should know that these whispers come to a person when he lacks knowledge about Sharee‘ah (Islamic legislation) in order to spoil his worship. Therefore, you are required not to surrender to them or obey them. Is it logical that a sane person obeys his enemy? You should not pay attention to whispers. When they come to your mind, seek refuge in Allah The Almighty from them as well as from the evil of Satan and do not pay them the least attention.
This is what you have to do in order to ward off these whispers. We advise you to be keen to know what is beneficial to you regarding religious matters, ask people of knowledge often and keep the company of righteous Muslim brothers, who help you to obey Allah.
We ask Allah to grant you success.
May the peace, mercy and blessings of Allah be upon you.
