Question
I am going to perform ‘Umrah, if Allah wills, and I wear medical stockings without which I cannot stand for a long time. I know that it is not permissible to wear any form-fitting clothes or stockings. What is the ruling regarding the stockings that are worn from the bottom of the foot up to the knee?
Fatwa
All perfect praise be to Allah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allah, and that Muhammad is His slave and Messenger.
Without doubt, medical stockings are a type of form-fitting clothes because they are tailored to fit the part of the body you mentioned. The one who wears it in Ihraam (ritual consecration) is therefore required to offer a Fidyah (expiation).
We notify the questioner that he must take off these stockings whenever there is no need for them as long as he is in a state of Ihraam. This is because the one who does an action that is forbidden whilst in a state of Ihraam without a need is sinful and is required to offer a Fidyah. However, if there is a necessity then he is not sinful but he is nonetheless required to offer a Fidyah.
Allah Knows best.
