Answer
All perfect praise be to Allah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allah, and that Muhammad sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allah exalt his mention ) is His slave and Messenger.
There is no mention in the Sharee’ah that one is prohibited from talking except in case of necessity, but it was reported that being talkative is dispraised. Jaabir, may Allah be pleased with him, narrated that the Prophet sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allah exalt his mention ) said: ''Thedearest and nearest among you to me on the Day of Judgment will be those who are the best of you in conduct, and the most hated among you to me and the farthest of you from me on the Day of Judgment will be the talkative, the pompous and the 'Mutafayhiqoon'. The companions asked him: O Allah’s Messenger! We know about the talkative and the pompous, but we do not know who the 'Mutafayhiqoon' are. He replied: “The arrogant people.” [At-Tirmithi]
Moreover, Ibn ‘Umar, may Allah be pleased with him, narrated that the Prophet sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allah exalt his mention ) said: ''Do not talk too much without the mention of Allah, as talking too much without the mention of Allah causes the heart to harden, and the farthest person from Allah is that who has a hard heart.” [At-Tirmithi and Ahmad - Shaikh Ahmad Shaakir classified it as Saheeh (sound) and Al-Albaani classified it as Dha’eef (weak)] In any case, the meaning of this Hadeeth is acceptable as it was reported that one should not speak except if he speaks good.
As regards leaving this habit, then it is easy for whoever Allah made it easy for him, so you should turn to Allah and ask Him to help you, and if you are sincere in doing so, Allah will enable you to achieve it. Also, what would help you in this regard is to consider the benefit of keeping silent except if you speak good, and consider the disadvantages that could be resulted from being talkative for one’s religion and worldly matters.
Finally, dear sister, we advise you to be keen on keeping company with pious and righteous Muslim women and attend the circles of knowledge with them, this is one of the best means to help you to be a pious woman.
May Allah enable you to be steadfast on righteousness and make you firm on the right path.
Allah Knows best.
