Question
Will the soul return to the body after burial? What does the dead person say in his grave?
Fatwa
All perfect praise be to Allah, The Lord of the worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allah, and that Muhammad is His Slave and Messenger.
In a Hadeeth (narration) on the authority of ‘Uthmaan, may Allah be pleased with him, whenever the Prophet finished burying the dead, he used to stand before the grave and order the Companions to supplicate Allah The Almighty to forgive the deceased and to grant him steadfastness because he was being questioned at that time. [Abu Daawood and Al-Haakim: Saheeh]
The Hadeeth states that the dead person benefits from the supplications of the living and that the slave will be tested and questioned in his grave. In a well-known Hadeeth on the authority of Al-Baraa' ibn ‘Aazib, may Allah be pleased with him, once the Prophet and his Companions were sitting around a grave. Two or three times he ordered them to seek refuge with Allah The Almighty from the punishment of the grave. He started describing the state of the souls of the believers and disbelievers when they are taken out of the body as well as what befalls each of them when the souls are returned to the bodies in the grave.
He mentioned that two angels will come to the believer, make him sit up and ask him, "Who is your Lord? What is your religion? And what was that man who was sent to you?" He will reply, "My Lord is Allah The Almighty, my religion is Islam and the man who was sent to me is the Messenger of Allah." They will ask, "Who made you aware of this?" He will reply, "I read the Book of Allah, believed in it as the truth."
Then a caller will call him from heaven: "My servant has spoken the truth, so spread a bed for him from Paradise, and open a door for him to Paradise so some of its air and perfume will reach him". His grave will be made for him as wide as the eye can see. Then, his good deeds will appear to him in the shape of a bright-faced, elegantly-clothed and well-scented man and bring him glad tidings that will please him and tell him that this is the day he was promised. Upon hearing this, he will say, "O my Lord! Make the [last] Hour come, make the [last] Hour come, so that I return to my family and property."
Then, the Prophet mentioned the disbeliever and what he will experience. He will be asked the same questions to which he will respond with exclamations of surprise and confusion and reply that he does not know. Then, a caller will call him from heaven: "My servant has lied, so spread a bed for him from Hell, and open a door for him to Hell so that some of its heat and poisonous wind will come to him, and his grave will be compressed, so that his ribs will be crushed together." Then, his evil deeds will appear to him in the shape of an badly dressed man emanating a foul-odor who will bring him evil tidings that will sadden him and he will be told that this is the day he was promised. Upon hearing that, he will say, "My Lord! Do not make [the final] Hour come." [Ahmad]
This is the trial and test that will take place in the grave. We implore Allah The Almighty to keep us firm in the worldly life and in the Hereafter.
And Allah knows best.
