Feeling Safe about Hypocrisy and is not being Worried about It

Question

I feel secure from hypocrisy. When I think about it I think "no I am not a hypocrite" because I don't lie and break my promises. I feel safe in my heart and I don't feel worried about hypocrisy much at all. I do not feel scared that I am a hypocrite. I want to feel scared that I am a hypocrite but I don't! I have some traits of hypocrisy like not praying Fajr and Isha in congregation and not concentrating in my prayers. I have read lots about hypocrisy and I know how bad it is but I still don't feel very bothered by it. Am I a hypocrite and how do I feel scared that I am hypocrite? It seems to be something involuntary!

Answer

All perfect praise be to Allah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allah, and that Muhammad sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) is His slave and Messenger.

The slave (person) should be afraid of Allah in all his circumstances. If you think about yourself, you will find that you are very negligent; some of which you acknowledge and some of which is hidden from you because you do not hold yourself accountable. If you really hold yourself accountable, you will find that you are negligent no matter how.

If you really think about this negligence, and realize the greatness of Allah, Almighty, and His Majesty, and that He is strong and punishes severely, then your heart will be filled with His fear and you will not leave yourself in charge of your affairs for a blink of an eye.

You will fear to become a hypocrite while you do not feel it, and that you will fear that your evil qualities will overcome you and they will lead to your destruction.

Only then, will you know that salvation is in being attached to Allah and not relying on your own self. All goodness is in the Hands of Allah, so think bad of your own self and always think about its defects. You should fear hypocrisy, as the one who is better than you [i.e. the Prophet] feared it.

Some scholars of the Salaf said about hypocrisy: “It is only a believer who fears hypocrisy and it is only a hypocrite who feels secure about it.

If you are not disturbed and worried about it except what you mentioned that you feel secure about it and you are not worried about it, then this is enough as a very serious matter.

So seek refuge in Allah from the evil of your own self and the evil of your bad deeds, and ask Allah to grant you Mercy and not leave you in charge of your affairs for a blink of an eye.

Allah knows best.
